Summer spotlight: A look back at our exciting events season
The Sheffield Mutual team have been very busy over the past few months attending a variety of events across South Yorkshire (and one in Derbyshire!). Keep reading to catch up on everything we’ve been up to over the past few months!
Sheffield Mutual Annual General Meeting – 15th June
We kicked off the event season with our Annual General Meeting (AGM). All our adult members received an invitation to attend or could choose to vote via post. But you might wonder - what actually happens at our AGM and is it worth attending?
Our AGM offers our members a valuable opportunity to connect with our Board, executive team, and familiar faces from our business development and member services teams. It’s a chance to voice their opinions on our operations and ask questions in a face-to-face setting.
This year, we voted on resolutions such as receiving reports, appointing auditors and re-electing Board members. The results of the 2024 AGM are available here. We also heard from our CEO, Jamie Bellamy, Chairman Stuart Hately and Martin Chatten from our auditors, Royce Peeling Green Limited.
After the formalities, we enjoyed a delicious meal from Tankersley Manor which gave us a chance to connect with our members.

Tom Simpson Retro Cycling Festival – 17th August
We returned to the Tom Simpson Retro Cycling Festival for the second consecutive year, a weekend event with a retro ride, guest speakers and the cyclist’s market on the Saturday which Emily, Sam and Sallie attended.
We held a fun competition on the day where visitors could guess the value of coins in a jar with the winner taking away a £25 Love2Shop gift card!

Chatsworth Country Fair – 30th – 1st September
At the end of August, we spent the weekend at the Chatsworth Country Fair. It was a brilliant 3-day event where we were able to engage in many great conversations, share lots of information about the Society and spread some awareness for Sheffield Mutual and what we do.

As at most of our events, we held a competition for ‘guess the name of the bear’ where our mascot is picked a name. The lucky winner chose the name ‘Sydney’ and won a £50 M&S gift card.
Apart from our activities, we had a chance to enjoy some incredible displays, including hot air balloons, aerobatics by pilot Mark Jeffries, and a parachute display by the Royal British Legion Parachute Team. Our Chief Operating Officer (COO), Paul, even attended Alan Titchmarsh's book signing!

It was a fantastic weekend that allowed us to meet many new people and spread awareness about Sheffield Mutual.
Penistone Show – 14th September
We’ve been regulars at the Penistone Show for the past few years, a yearly celebration of farming, food, and agriculture.
This year we were joined by face painter Guiliana who was a welcome addition to our stand. She was a huge hit with the kids who enjoyed getting their faces painted with everything from butterflies to beasts! Whilst the kids were enjoying having their faces painted our team were able to chat to the parents about Sheffield Mutual.
Our “guess the name of the bear” competition made a return, with ‘Smudge’ being the winning name this time.
We love to meet our members at any event we are attending – so if you see us, make sure you pop by our stand and say hello.
It turned out to be a very busy and successful day! We think it is important to connect and show support for our local community by attending events such as Penistone Show whilst offering savings products and supporting financial well-being.

Wisewood Junior Football Club’s Annual Golf Day – 20th September
Emily and Sam from our Business Development Team spent a Friday afternoon at Stocksbridge Golf Club for Wisewood Junior Football Club’s annual golf day to raise money for the club. We were able to sponsor two holes.
We were kindly invited to attend by James from JPM Financial. It was a fun way to support a local club.

Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10k – 29th September
Our final event of the year was the Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10K. As you may know, we were the title sponsors of both the Sheffield Half Marathon and 10K for 2024, and our sponsorship continues into 2025.
On the day we set up our stand in the events village in Tudor Square alongside other sponsors and charities etc. We were able to give out plenty of branded goodies and information at the end of the race and received many entries into our competition to win a ‘runners bundle’ featuring a pair of Shokz headphones.

The race began shortly after 9:30 with our COO, Paul, waving the starting flag alongside Jayne Dunn, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and BBC Radio Sheffield. We watched the winner cross the finish line less than 30 minutes later!
We had a team of 11 running for us and participating in the corporate challenge, where our team managed to come 8th! A great achievement.
We’re incredibly proud to be the title sponsor of the Sheffield 10K and Half Marathon, an event that brings people together, celebrates personal achievements and supports important causes – all things that are important to us. As a Friendly Society, we’re committed to helping people, whether that’s through this event or by supporting their financial well-being with our savings and investment products. We believe in the power of coming together to make a positive impact, and we’re excited to be part of an event that shares that spirit.
It was a well-organised event showcasing the community spirit of Sheffield, whilst raising lots of money for worthy causes. We are proud to be the title sponsors again in 2025 and look forward to doing it all again next year!
