New Chief Executive Appointed
18th May 2009
We are pleased to announce that Tony Burdin has been appointed as Chief
Executive, replacing Andrew Townsley, who left recently to take up a similar position with another Friendly Society. Andrew was with the Society for just over 7 years, in which time there has been considerable change and growth, and we wish him every success in the future.
Tony has worked in the mutual sector for nearly 30 years, and has held a number of senior positions with two top-twenty building societies. More recently, Tony was the managing director of a successful Guernsey based building society subsidiary.
Commenting on his appointment, Tony said: "This is a time of great opportunity for friendly societies, and I am thrilled to be joining Sheffield Mutual during one of the strongest growth periods in the society's history. The business has delivered year on year market beating returns to members and considerable growth in is membership, which looks set to continue as mutual organisations like Sheffield Mutual are seen as a safe and secure alternative for investors in today's volatile and uncertain times.
As a relatively small and nimble organisation, we are better placed than larger non-mutual organisations to make the most of the opportunities that the current markets present to us, whilst continuing to put our members' interests first. Having spent some years working in different parts of the UK, I am delighted to be returning to my geographical roots in South Yorkshire to head a business that I believe has a very positive future."
