About Us

Sheffield Mutual was founded in 1892 to provide funeral and sickness benefit schemes to its members in times of financial hardship. We may have been helping to look after people for a long time, but also appreciate the importance of providing products that our relevant to today’s members, such as Child Trust Funds and Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). We now have approaching 6,000 members, who hold in excess of 6,500 individual policies, and the Society’s funds under management are in excess of £20,000,000.

Friendly Societies, like ourselves, were established to encourage self-help and personal responsibility and to enable people with limited financial resources to improve their economic status. As an independent mutual organisation, we do not have shareholders, which means that the full benefits of our products are passed on to our customers (known as members), mainly through our market leading with-profits fund. We also aim to offer a more personalised service than many of our competitors and you will always be able to speak directly to one  of our friendly and knowledgeable staff, based at our head office near Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Sheffield Mutual is registered under the Friendly Societies Act 1974 (Reg. No. 810F) and we are authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA. No. 139855). Our prudent investment strategy is designed to provide a safe and secure home for members’ funds, but you can also invest with the peace of mind of knowing that the Society is a member of the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
