  • What is a Friendly Society?
The values of Friendly Societies date back 2000 years when Roman legionnaires clubbed together to provide for each other's financial protection. The principle of mutual assistance was developed and by the end of the 18th Century the first Friendly Society Act was introduced to provide a basis for future development.

Times have changed since then, but Sheffield Mutual still operates under the same fundamental basis of providing assistance and benefits to its members.

We offer a range of savings and protection policies including tax-exempt schemes, a feature unique to Friendly Societies. For further information visit the Sheffield Mutual Friendly Society web site (http://www.sheffieldmutual.com) or read and take part in the discussion in this forum.

  • A call to increase the Tax Exempt Saving Plan Premium limits
Do you think the government should raise the premium limit for tax exempt savings plans? At present the saving limit is £25 per month and has remained unchanged for over a decade. Sheffield Mutual believes the limit should be increased to £50 per month to encourage people to save more and plug the savings gap in the UK.

  • University Fees
Are parents aware of the amount of financial support their children will need to help them graduate from university? Nearly a quarter of students expect that it will take them more than 15 years after their graduation to repay their student debts. Should parents be made more aware that the sooner they are able to start saving for their children’s future the less a financial struggle it will be to fund them through university?
